Jorge Khan has been with the brand for a while now, but we shake our heads for not bringing him on from day one. Well, in all fairness, we didn’t know about him until a friend introduced him to us. After that introduction we couldn’t react fast enough to bring him on board. He embodies all that we represent from creativity to athletics. He’s a man who blindly pursues what he loves with passion, and the end result is something beautiful. So let us introduce you to one of our dear friends, Jorge Khan.
STRATA: So, Jorge, how did you end up here?
"It was 10am on a tuesday. I was on my way to a meeting to start working design for a Peruivian brand."
"One of my friends called me and asked me where I was. I told him where I was headed and he told me get off that bus and let me introduce you to one of the guys from STRATA that just came here from the states. That morning I met Jason Rodriguez, we clicked and I signed on with the brand that day."
STRATA: What do you think it is about surfing and skating that has a tendency to draw creative types?
"It doesn’t matter what sport you do. I believe if you love what you do you’ll create incredible things."
STRATA: Creativity comes from somewhere, whether it’s an idea, an emotion or a feeling. What often inspires your art?
"What inspires my art are the interactions with people everyday. No day is the same, no person is the same. I learn from each individual and that reflects my art with minimalist details. It’s almost as if I have ideas contantly living in my head so every opportunity I have I pick up my pencil to make it a reality."
STRATA: Has art always been a part of your life?
"Art is a very important part of my life. Every since I was little my mother would buy me paint pens so that I could paint canvas’ to hang up in our house. Art has helped me be closer with my family and I love to create it."
STRATA: How do you want people to perceive your work?
"I would love for people to view it as something that is original. I like to create one of a kind pieces, so that those who I gift it to feel something special, like they are the only ones to have it. Its something that you can’t put a value on."
STRATA: Let’s talk music. What really gets you going?
"Ah that’s a really great question. To paint, I listen to Wolfmother, Skrillex, Damian Marley, The Doors, Franz Ferdinand, Jack Johnson, George Thorogood, Jose Gonzalez, Lil Supa, MGMT, Muse, The Raconteurs, The Shins, and especially Yeasayer."
STRATA: Peru is such a magical place. How has Peru shaped you as an individual?
"Peru is definitely a magical place, the people, the waves, the history, and the food alone is enough to come on a trip here."
"Peru has influenced me to work hard everyday. Its a fast pace environment here in Lima so you have to be positive and get ahead for your life and your loved ones."
STRATA: The surf seems pretty surreal over there, what is your favorite break?
"My favorite wave is La Herradura Chorillos Corazon."
STRATA: Where do you typically find yourself in your free time?
"Right now I don’t have as much free time as I used to. But when I do have free time I spend it with my little son, Joshua. I paint and he watches next to me trying to paint himself. If the waves are good I’ll find time to go surf."
STRATA: The van is running and your bags are packed, where are we going?
"Well, in reality I would have to take my son Joshua and my girl Sharon. I like to take them anywhere I can with me."
"But it would be Indo or Puerto Escondido."
STRATA: What does it mean to live from within?
"Do the things that you enjoy. Whatever those things are will move you. But most importantly to always be yourself."
